Why do I need to add a QR Code to my wine?
Regulation (EU) 2021/2117 requires wines in the EU to disclose detailed ingredient, allergen, and nutritional content. Using a QR Code is highly recommended as it avoids cluttering the label and enhances consumer access to this vital information. QR Codes streamline compliance by linking directly to extensive product details, fostering transparency and supporting informed consumer choices in a space-efficient manner.
What is the CAP reform and what does it mean for winemakers?
The Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) reform, effective from January 1, 2023, introduces new labeling regulations for wine producers within the EU. This reform mandates detailed labeling on ingredients, allergens, and nutritional values to enhance transparency and promote sustainable practices. Winemakers, including importers, have until December 8, 2023, to comply with these regulations. The pending details on enforcement are expected by summer, emphasising the need for winemakers to prepare for compliance to ensure their products remain marketable in the EU.
Do I need to use QR codes?
QR codes are a preferred choice for conveying comprehensive product information under Regulation (EU) 2021/2117. It sidesteps the limitations of physical label space, offering a neat solution to present ingredients, nutritional facts, and allergens without overcrowding the label. Alternatives include a direct web address or detailed labeling, but QR Codes are favored for their convenience and efficiency in linking consumers to additional information.
What if I don't comply?
Non-compliance with Regulation (EU) 2021/2117 poses significant risks. After December 8, 2023, wines lacking the required ingredient, allergen, and nutritional information will be subject to enforcement actions by member state governments. This includes removal of the non-compliant wines from sale and the possibility of fines being imposed on the producers. It's essential to adhere to these regulations to ensure your wines remain available in the EU market and to avoid financial penalties.

When are nutritional values and ingredients necessary?
Nutritional values and ingredients should be available where consumers can purchase your product. This means there are a variety of places it should be available: on the bottle (physical label or QR), in web stores, or online catalogues with ordering options.
Does this apply to my products in circulation before Dec. 8, 2023?
No, the regulation states that, “After the date of application of the new labeling rules, existing wine stocks should be allowed to be marketed until exhaustion. Operators should be given sufficient time to adapt to the new labeling rules before they are applied.”
Does this rule apply to bulk wine?
After December 8, 2023, non-bottled must provide the same information as for bottled wine.
Can all required information be added to the QR code instead of physical label?
Not quite. Allergens, energy, and sulphite declaration must be printed directly on physical labels. Supplemental information like nutrition details may appear digitally.
